League Div 1 Rd 11

Summerhill took on St Colmcilles in the final round of League Division One in Summerhill. on a bright but showery Friday evening. Going into the game, Summerhill sat joint top of a very tight league table so a positive result would be needed to guarantee a place in the semifinals. The visitors also needed something from the game as they tried to avoid been in a relegation playoff so there was a lot at stake for both teams.

Summerhill started the game brightly with Conor Frayne scoring a point with their first attack. Center back Ross Ryan added a second with eight minutes on the clock. A Kevin Lyons point in the 13th minute saw the home side lead by three points to two. The visitors hit back with a goal in the 15th minute to take the lead and added another four points without reply over the next 10 minutes to lead by 6. In this period Summerhill were dominating possession but missed a number of good scoring chances whilst the visitors were proving much more efficient. With the points coming from Kevin Lyons as well as two frees from Conor Frayne and a free from Diarmuid McCabe. This left the half time score Summer Hill 0-7. St Colmcilles 1-6.

The visitors regained the initiative at the start of the second half, scoring the first two points to push the lead back out to four. Three further Conor Frayne points in the 12th, 14th and 16th minute cut the lead back to the minimum mid-way through the half. Another point from the visitors was answered by three further Summerhill points  two from Diarmuid McCabe and one from Conor Frayne which saw the home side lead by one with five minutes left. Two quick points from the visitors saw them regain the lead with time running out. The last score of the game was to be from a Diarmuid McCabe free from distance, that saw the game tied as the clock went into the red. Both sides had chances to secure the win but in the end both sides had to settle for the draw.

Full time score Summer Hill 0-14, St Colmcilles 1-11.

Coupled with results elsewhere, the point saw Summerhill end up level on points with Skryne at the top of the table and safely qualified for the semifinal. There was initial confusion when the County Board deemed Skryne to have topped the table on the basis of their superior scoring difference but some days later this was clarified. Summerhill were deemed to have finished top due to their head-to-head record versus Skryne who they had beaten in the first round of the league way back in March. Summerhill will now meet 4th place team Donaghmore Ashbourne in the semifinal in a week’s time.
