Summerhill U12s won the Fergus Hopkins Invitational Tournament hosted by the Round Towers club in Kildare town beating Killeavy from Armagh in the final on Saturday. This is a great achievemnet in what was a high quality field that had 16 teams from all 4 provinces as well as Warwickshire from England. Some of the teams taking part were St Finbarrs from Cork, Salthill Knocknacarra from Galway, Rhode from Offaly Arles Kilcruise from Laois, Killeavy from Armagh, Palitine from Carlow as well as Kildare teams Nass and the hosts Round Towers.
Summerhill won their first 2 group games against Round Towers and Palatine but lost the final group game to Naas by 12 points. This defeat was made worse by the loss of our full back Eoghan Grehan with a bad shoulder injury.
As runners up in our group we face a very good Warwickshire team that had topped their group in the quarter finals. Moral was low after the defeat to Naas and the loss of Eoghan but the lads put in a great display of skill and determination to win out by 10 points.
In the semi final we faced a confident Naas side again who had well beaten us in the group stages. Summerhill showed real hearth and will to win to win out in a titanic struggle by 2 points. Summerhill started the game with 2 quick fire goals that rattled Naas. They defended heriocically throughout with our goal keepers making some outstanding saves and the backs getting blocks in time and time again to defend the lead, finally winning by 4-3 to 1-10.
In the final Summerhill were up agains the unbeaten Killevy side from Armagh. The exertions of the semi final was taking its toll on the Summerhill lads, several of who were out on their feet as the faced their 6th match of the day. But despite this they tackles and harried and ran themselves into the ground to come out on top by a scoreline of 4-3 to 1-7 in a tight game. This was a fantastic win for a talented group of footballers. More than anything this group have great hearth and committment as well as a great will to win.
At the end of the match the jublient team was addressed by Kildare legend Glen Ryan who complimentment them not only on their football skills but also on the way they carry themselves and how represent their club so well. He wished the lads well and hopes they will come back next year to defend the trophy.
Huge credit and thanks must go to all at Round Towers GAA Club for great day and a superbly organised event. The tournment was very enjoyable. We thank Round Towers for the invite and we hope we be able to return next year to defend the trophy. Thanks also to the ladies who did the catering, there were plenty of teas burgers and sandwiches to make sure no one went hungry.
