Summerhill won their U12 final against Gaeil Colmcille in Rathcarn on Wednesday evening. The game was played in glorious sun shine in stark contrast to the cold and wet conditions endured in many of our earlier games.
Our lads eventually got the better of their opponents after a fantastic match that ebbed and flowed throughout. The final score was 34 to 19 but that does not do justice to how close the match actually was. Indeed Gaeil Colmcille were leading early in the second half before a late Summerhill rally finally sealed the win. The quality of the football from both teams was of a very high standard and the committment and effort shown by both teams was immense and was indicitive of all that is good in our great sport.
The game was played in the usual 2 team, 11 a side format to ensure that all players get as much game time as possible. Summerhills Team Blue led by 9 points to 6 at half time and team Gold were down 7 points to 5. Gaeil Colmicille started the second half strongly and took the overall lead with a few early scores. At this point the match was very much in the balance. The Gaeil Colmcille lads were doing a good job in containing our bigger stronger lads but at this point our younger lads really came in to their own and battled their hearts out to turn the games in our favour. As has happened in many of our games this year Summerhill finished strongly to pull away in the last 10 minutes to win out. Team Blue won their match 16-11 and team Gold 18-8 leaving the final score 34 scores to 19.
After the final whistle the trophy was presented to our joint captains Adam and Eoghan by Ciarán Flynn (Secretary of Coiste na nÓg in Meath). Many thanks to Ciaran for coming down to present the trophy.
Credit must go to a the Gaeil Colmcille team for their part in a memorable game. Their team contain some very talented players and there is no doubts we will be meeting them again in the future.
We must also give a special mention to one of our goal keepers James, who unfortunately missed the game due to been on a family holidays. Jame never missed a training session or a game all year and played a huge part in Summerhill getting to the final.
Well done to all the players and their coaches David Gaffeney, Stephen McDonnell and Adrian Byrne.
Our joint captains are presented the trophy by Ciarán Flynn.
