2015 Senior Player Profiles

Senior Manager - Declan McCabe

Number of years in charge: 5 if I survive to the end of 2015
Greatest achievement as manager: Achieving 100% attendance at training with all players/management working to their maximum – not there yet.
What do you see as the percentage split between work-rate and talent in terms of what it takes to become a great footballer? Hard work BEATS talent when talent doesn’t work. Unfortunately I have met my fair share where talent wins the battle but hard work is not there to support.
If you could take a sportsperson from another sport and turn them into a Summerhill footballer, who would you take and why? I have huge respect for any sportsperson who has made it against all the odds and they would always be welcome additions to Summerhill GFC.  I have come across too many who are not working to their maximum potential because they have it too easy and quick to use a safety net.
If you could choose one footballer from another team to play with Summerhill who would it be? I would look for permission for 2 footballers – firstly I would look for a person who can sell the idea of how important the goal keeping position is in the modern game, we appear to have very few willing individuals in the club who want to wear the No 1 Jersey and this should be a top priority for all age groups up to adult, Secondly give me a natural scoring forward – a player with the proven capability of winning matches single handedly but also a player who could bring others into the game, a player through the demonstration of his talent would generate improved forward play across all teams in the club.
Are there any sporting managers from other codes who you find inspirational? I was lucky enough to meet Joe Schmitt earlier this year. He has major personal challenges, he is top of the class in his profession but yet still he made my daughters and I feel like we were the most important people in his life for that moment in time. In the world of GAA Mickey Harte has been dealt huge personal challenges but unbelievably has remained focused on his Managers job and most important of all continues to make himself available to others in times of extreme tragedy.
Which team do you look forward to playing the most and why? Any club in Leinster senior club championship competition, it means Summerhill are Co-champions and it means that the players/management are learning from the experience, striving for better all the time.
What is the overall aim this year? A fully fit Summerhill panel being given the proper time(with no distractions) to prepare gives the club a chance to compete in a number of adult championship competitions – the aim will then look after itself.
Who was your sporting idol growing up? Any peer player who I understood to be doing better than myself. Continuously trying to emulate these individuals brought its rewards.
Do you possess any sentimental GAA items? Memories
What's the best sports book that you've ever read? As my loved ones will tell you I am not the best at finishing a book, I take what I need from a book and move on. “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg  explains why habits exist & how they can be changed – l try to apply lessons from this book on the training field, work in progress for sure.
One word to describe you? Perfectionist (But I am working hard in understanding that others may not always be on the same hymn sheet)
What does your Club mean to you? Don’t tell Catherine but it was the primary reason why I chose Summerhill as a place to live.
Who is the most committed Club person in Summerhill?  Never a single person – At any moment in time a person doing the maximum they can do for the benefit of the club. I can speak with authority on this one as my house overlooks the pitch and clubhouse so I see first-hand the supreme contributions of many.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? My mother would always say “Work hard and be nice to people”
